New York City is the largest city of the United States of America (also the largest city of the State of New York). The city is also referred to the City of New York to distinguish from the state of the same name. New York City is also a global city which exerts a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education and entertainment. It is also home to the headquarters of United Nations, which makes NYC a important center for international dimplomacy and the cultural capital of the world.
Situated on one of the largest natural harbors in the world. New York City has a unique system of counties called "boroughs". The five boroughs — The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island — were grouped into a single city in 1898. With the 2012 population of 8,366,697 people distributed on a land of 302.64 square miles. It is considered to be the most densely populated city of the USA.
New York City had its origins in 1624 when it was founded as a trading post by colonists of the Dutch Republic. The trading post was soon named New Amsterdam in 1626. The city was soon taken over by English colonists and was renamed to New York after the Duke of York. The place has historically been served as the capital of the United States from 1785 to 1790. It has been the largest city of the USA ever since.
Many districts and landmarks in New York City became well known to the 50 million annual visitors. Times Square has been known as "The Crossroads of the World" and the brightly illuminated hub of the Broadway theatre district, one of the world's busiest pedestrian intersections, and a major center of the world's entertainment industry. The names of many of the city's bridges, skyscrapers, and parks are known around the world. New York City's financial district, anchored by Wall Street in Lower Manhattan, has been called the world's leading financial center, and the home of the New York Stock Exchange, the world's largest stock exchange by total market capitalization of its listed companies. Manhattan's real estate market is among the most expensive worldwide. Manhattan's Chinatown incorporates the highest concentration of Chinese people in the Western Hemisphere.
The New York City Subway is also well kown and one of the most extensive rapid transit systems worldwide. Numerous colleges and universities are located in New York, including Columbia University, New York University, and Rockefeller University, which have been ranked among the top 35 in the world.
